blog archive Wednesday June 14, 2006 | I wish you were a stranger I could disengage...

I’ve started to write again, so I felt the need for a new layout. What do u think? Anyways… to start off…

So I feel the need to refer back to my New Year’s Resolution entry and start to fill in the blanks from there…

So, I can finally start to check or X off things on this list:

Resolutions for 2006

[ X ] get a job in web and/or interactive design- this is most important to me as of now. I hate that some people think that I’m a big giant loser because I don’t have a job yet.
[ ] get a great score on my GREs.- studying vocab like crazy
[ \ ] lose weight and start to workout more- started to do really well, but then the holidays killed it
[ \ ] finally finish cleaning my room [ \ ] determine which occupational path I will be taking the rest of my life- web and interactive design or teaching?
[ \ ] save up $ for grad school for the above [ ] attempt to snowboard
[~~] get a bf – well, letting fate take its course really
[ \ ] travel more- possibly actually go somewhere with friends
[ ] get the rest of the list done by 2007

X= complete, \ = in the process.. or started, but then…(shall we say, got side-tracked?), ~~ = umm… yeah… bit confusing?

To start off, I finally have a job. (woo hoo! extremely happy) After 4 months from getting let go for budget reasons from one of my jobs, I was able to get an internship in NYC. I was there for 2 months. I would probably still be there if the commute didn’t suck so much (3 hrs everyday! wtf), and I wasn’t offered another job. It’s cool, now my commute is cut down to about 30 mins total. I get to design in Flash which is cool. It’s kinda strange though… in school, I never would have seen myself as a Flash designer/developer. I was not really much the coding type. So, I’m no longer a big GIANT loser… maybe just a little one silly.

I’ve started to work out a little more. As long as the weather isn’t crappy, and I don’t have errands, I’ve been walking over 4, almost 5 miles a day. I’ve also been watching what I eat, for the most part, trying to keep tabs of my calorie intake. I’ve limited myself to about 1,200-1,500 a day, do 150-200 crunches on my giant rubber ball, plus 45 push-ups off of it, and a bunch of other ish. My next goal is to start running. Whoah, I haven’t ran, like hard-core, since playing volleyball in high school. But, I must start; I have to loose 25 lbs by October?! Or so says my doctor. How crazy is that?! stunned So, maybe i should add:

[ ] Start running.

Ummm… my room was clean, sort of… and now it’s not anymore.

I haven’t necessarily come up with a definite plan for “my future occupational goals” but I have decided that I will do web/interactive design for the next few years, maybe till I’m about 27 (which give me 4 years) and see where I stand. If I finally get design out of my system, my goal is to spend the next year just strictly substitute teaching or being a teacher’s aide to gain more experience, and then go into grad school for my certifcation and master’s. I know I don’t want to teach anything older than 7th grade; so at least I have my limit. Which brings me to my subbing experience…

Well, it was definitely an experience . (But a good one.) I ended up subbing at my sister’s school, so a lot of the kids already recoginized me. Apparently, it also went around the school to both the faculty and the kids, the specific days I was subbing. (Yeah, not a lot of pressure there…) I subbed for 7th grade Social Studies and Literature and Language Arts. Let’s see what happened: In the morning, I forgot to take attendance, so the office called me over the PA system (oops). I was supposed to write my name on the board, and I blanked?! I’m so not used to being called “Ms.” The first class I was able to kinda just observe the teacher’s aide. So that was cool. The second class, I went over notes, but a little too quickly because I had a few minutes to kill at the end. The third class was crazy! A student was misbehaving and so the kids were trying to get me to call him by a different name. But we got through most of the notes because I kept telling them that even if we didn’t get through all the notes, they would still have a test. Strangely enough, at the end of the class, I had a few students come up to me and tell me that I was “the smartest sub they ever had” because a girl lost her earring post and I suggested to use the eraser top of a pen/pencil. During reading time, was a little crazy. I threated to kick a student out of my class becuase he wasn’t even supposed to be there. That was great. I had to pull the whole “turning off the lights and treating the students like kindergartners” trick because they couldn’t understand the concept of a quiet whisper. That worked for the most part. And the next class, the teacher’s aide taught, and I had to read out loud. Plus, I had homework that night- I had to come up with a thesis statement and reasons to support it on the subject I know the least…. can anyone take a freakin’ guess to what that topic was?…… no?………. any takers?…… freakin’ DATING?! shocked Not only that, but I had to make sure that these 13 year olds couldn’t flip it into anything sick.

The next day was a little better. I was starting to feel a lot more comfortable in front of a class. It was a little crazy though because it was St. Patrick’s Day, which meant that it was a Friday with sugary treats. (CRAZY! wink) I went through all the notes, the third class was actually well-behaved. The afternoon was when the chaos ensued. I freaked my kids out because during reading time, one student kept on talking and getting up and I called him out on it, with his name. So one girl had said, “Uh oh, that’s not good that it’s only her second day here and she knows you by name.” And my response was, “Actually, I know everyone’s name.” So they all started to quiz me on their names, and strangely enough, I got them all! laughing Haha… The kids wanted soda, so I made them a compromise- that if we got through almost everything for language arts and lit, then they could each have a little soda. After, I had to give out a quiz, and one girl was stupid enough to cheat in front of me?! I was sooo pissed; I grabbed her paper and yelled at her. wtf censored Grrr… We went over the thesis statement assignment. This got interesting. I didn’t give them a forewaring about keeping the thesis statement clean, because I couldn’t think of any “bad” ones. So, I had one student raise his hand to give me his thesis statement which was not a “good” one. So, after that, I had to give the warning of: “Please think before you speak. No…before you even raise your hand. Keep all the words coming out of your mouth clean. Seriously, think before you even open your mouth, and keep it clean.” After that little statement, it got fun. We went over the classes statements, and I made sure that they understood the whole “thesis and reasoning” concept. After, the class had to read a story out loud, but we were crunched for time, so I started to read; which may or may not have been a good idea- I tend to read really really quickly. But I freaked the kids out even more because I would be reading really quickly and in mid-sentence, if a student misbehaved and didn’t think that I could see it, I would call them out on it. It was great. And strangely enough, after the 2 days of chaos, some of the kids actually said that I was the best sub they ever had. I have to admit, that was a great feeling. happy pleased

Anyways, back to the list….

Saving $- that goes hand-in-hand with getting a job.

The little “~~” symbol… yeah… that’s a completely different discussion… Let’s just say that all this time, I’ve only been worried about 3 factors/characteristics with guys; that ALL the good ones are either: TAKEN, GAY, or JUST FRIENDS… well, apparently there’s another freakin’ factor that I didn’t even consider… alt

Travelling more is definitely moving full speed ahead. So far I’ve spent the weekend in the Hamptons (which will be my next entry… so the details will be in there, with pics!) And there are plans in the works for a dorks’ roadtrip down to Myrtle Beach. Also, a CrEw plane trip to either San Diego, CA or the Bahamas. I’ll be happy anywhere as long as there’s a beach . Can’t wait!! extremely happy

I think that’s it for now. I’ll post an entry about this weekend, with pics next. Just have to get them organized.

Nite everyone!
